Shift work; long periods of time away from home
Taking care of a baby can be a really tough job as most parents will tell you. What if your baby happens to be a ship weighing 150,000 tons and is 345 meters long?
Chief Engineers go all over the globe running the largest, most powerful vessels ever. They run the engines and power systems and work the day-to-day operations of ships. The ship is his baby and he has to anticipate its needs before it needs him. A Chief Engineer could find himself welding the hydraulic system of a crane while having to coordinate the maintenance of the world’s most powerful engine. It’s a huge job, but it can be very rewarding to be the “parent” of an engine so large.
