Work Involved

From the control centre Marine Communication Officers watch over the harbour, using state-of-the-art radars, radios and other tech-savvy logging and coding gadgets. A MCO always has to be on her game warning approaching ships of potential hazards to the safety of the ship and the surrounding environment. MCOs make sure that ships are within safe distances of each other. They are the backbone of a web of traffic surveillance and reporting systems keeping Canadian coasts safe.

When an SOS call comes in MCOs respond quickly, recording and relaying crucial information between stricken vessels and rescue operations. An MCO had better be able to multi-task as she also broadcasts weather forecasts, waterway conditions, hazards to navigation and keeps tabs on pollution.
