Long periods of time at sea, but a great chance to experience many destinations
Two weeks into a month long voyage at sea the crew is settled in, the captain has the ship on auto pilot, the cook is stirring away in the galley and the Marine Engineer is hard at work making sure that his vessel functions 100%.
The Marine Engineer does anything and everything to an engine room to keep it running. He makes sure that every machine works and if it doesn’t, he fixes it. He can install, operate, maintain and repair just about any system on the ship that becomes their baby, even on long journeys where there is nobody to help. Sometimes he flies by the seat of his pants but, covered in slick, black grease, surrounded by spare parts and a several hundred horsepower engine churning away, he gets the job done.
Five-year post secondary diploma in Marine Engineering
Shipping lines, ferries (BC Ferries), and cruise ships
With experience you may move into management or become a Marine Safety Inspector
