Shift work; sleep at home
A Railcar Mechanic (sometimes called a carman) lives his job outside or under a shelter. He?s got his tools and his two hands when he tackles a monstrous railcar, sometime slithering underneath the behemoths to replace a part.
Railcar Mechanics fix the hundreds of machines that come through the rail yard every day. They?re moving all around the inside and outside, learning and repairing anything from a faulty pressure hose for the brake system to a squeaky chair in the dining car. These mechanics are diverse and experience everything there is to know about a train so that one day they?ll get the chance to take the wheel of their own train and head into the countryside.
First things first - find an apprenticeship position as a Railcar Mechanic with a railway. Or, go directly to a Heavy Duty Mechanic Program.
Railways of all sizes
You may advance into positions such as shop foreman
